Sleighing your Meta ads: Wrapping up your festive digital strategy

Last week I spoke at Fundraising Everywhere’s IRL meetup (decked out in festive jumpers and powered by mince pies - yes, in September) about a topic that’s top-of-mind for every digital fundraiser right now: getting your Christmas Meta ad campaign in order.

We want to help you maximise those year-end donations, so here’s a roundup of what I covered, complete with key takeaways, performance insights from real client appeals, and creative formats that actually convert.

In this blog you’ll learn:

  • Why you can’t just take your direct mail appeal and put it in a digital campaign

  • The essential 3-part ecosystem behind high-converting Meta ads

  • Successful case studies from The Fire Fighters Charity and Focus Ireland

  • Creative formats that stop scrollers in their tracks

1. Get on Santa’s ‘Nice List’ (plan and optimise early)

A successful Christmas appeal isn't something you can launch on a whim in mid-December and hope for the best. Getting on "Santa's Nice List" means planning your full-funnel strategy early and staying ready to tweak as results come in.

Don’t treat Meta ads purely as a cash machine for cold audiences. Balance your performance media (conversions and lead generation) with awareness media (reach and video engagement) to warm up supporters before making the big festive ask.

Pro tip: Look at your timing! Our data shows that Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) often drops significantly the closer you get to Christmas Day. Structure your budget so you can scale spend during those high-intent final two weeks.

2. Digital ≠ direct mail

One of the biggest traps charities fall into is treating digital ads like a digital version of direct mail.

Traditional direct mail relies on a single visual and one carefully crafted pack sent to a segmented file. Digital doesn't work like that. On Meta, success comes from running thematic creative testing simultaneously, testing distinct messaging routes like cause-led, impact-led, or tangible-led asks against broad and custom lookalike audiences to see what performs.

3. Master the tech ecosystem

A brilliant piece of ad copy won't deliver if your tech setup is misfiring. If your tracking isn't right, you won't know which ads are actually driving donations, and if your checkout is clunky, you'll lose supporters right at the finish line. Before throwing budget at Christmas ads, make sure your full digital chain is tight:

  • Tracking & attribution: Ensure your Meta Pixel, Conversions API (CAPI), and GA4 are fully set up, tested, and talking to each other.

  • Frictionless journeys: Ad creative is only step one. Check if your landing pages load fast and how many steps your donation form takes on mobile.

What does the data say? Real success stories

Here is a peek at how these principles played out in real client Christmas campaigns:

The Fire Fighters Charity (lottery launch)

To launch a festive lottery product, we split creative into distinct thematic routes (Prize-led, Cause-led, Item-led, and Impact-led).

  • The result: 1,553 lottery players acquired at a £49 CPA (£5.48 average gift, 1.34 Year-1 ROAS).

  • What worked: Combining ad angles, specifically Item + Impact and Prize + Item, delivered the best results, with Prize and Cause-led routes taking top spot for overall efficiency.

Focus Ireland (Christmas cash appeal)

To drive individual cash gifts, we tested five creative routes including Impact, Case Study, Solution, Cause, and a Coffee Shop value exchange.

  • The result: 551 donations driven at a €91 CPA (€67.42 average gift).

  • What worked: The Case Study + Coffee Shop route delivered a 1.08 ROAS (€62 CPA). CPAs dropped sharply in late December, and by saving budget to scale spend in the final fortnight, we brought in the most cost-efficient donors of the campaign.

4 creative formats that stop the scroll

When creating your Christmas ad campaign, you need to explore different types of ad design. Authentic imagery: Real, candid photos from the field beat generic stock imagery every time.

  • UI & iconography: Phone, internet, or map visuals tap into everyday digital habits and spark immediate curiosity.

  • Chat & text formats: Screenshots mimicking WhatsApp messages or text threads make ads feel personal and give an "inside track".

  • Editorial & text-only graphics: Bold, simple text cards or news-style headlines stand out dramatically in busy social feeds.
