Banned and Blocked: the new landscape of digital fundraising

If you feel like digital marketing changes every week, you aren't imagining it. From compounding algorithm updates to strict ad platform policies, reaching and converting donors on social channels in 2026 requires a major shift in strategy.
In a recent Fundraising Everywhere webinar, Hynt Co-founder Josh Leigh broke down the current state of digital advertising, debunking common myths, and explaining why moving to a "two-step mobilisation model" is essential for long-term growth. You can watch the full talk on the Fundraising Everywhere website or read our quick breakdown and start making Meta work for you.
Facebook isn't dead
How many times have you heard someone say “But nobody uses Facebook”? PSA: They don’t know what they’re talking about.
Despite what tech hot-takers claim, Facebook is still the no.1 social platform worldwide (except in North Korea but hey, we can give them a pass on that one).
But the nature of the platform has fundamentally changed. Only about 17% of feed content comes from a user’s actual friends - the remaining 83% is dictated by creators, algorithms, and advertisers. Facebook is no longer a cosy community bulletin board for organic updates - it’s a paid ecosystem where charities need to pay to be seen
Ad platforms are getting strict (and retargeting is harder)
Running ads for good causes used to feel easier, but the rules keep tightening. Platform privacy changes killed off niche interest targeting for sensitive topics (like specific health conditions or social causes). Which is a blessing for people who may have been targeted with antagonistic content by bad actors but way less helpful for charities offering real support.
Then factor in Apple’s iOS privacy pop-ups, and tracking who actually donated after seeing an ad is trickier than ever. To make matters worse, Meta’s sweeping "social issue" flags mean everyday charity ads, from local hospices to dog rescues, get randomly thrown in ad jail.
Asking for money on the first date isn’t so easy anymore
Trying to convince a total stranger to set up a monthly direct debit off a single social media ad is an uphill battle. Remember where your audience is: scrolling aimlessly while waiting for a kettle to boil or hiding in the bathroom for five minutes. Expecting immediate wallet-opening moments from a distracted scroller just doesn't line up with how real humans use their phones.
Your game plan: The two-step mobilisation model
Stop burning budget on rented land (third-party social apps) trying to force instant donations. Shift your energy toward collecting first-party data that belongs to you.
STEP 1: THE FIRST DATE (Acquire). Run easy-breezy ads (petitions, fun quizzes, values) to grab subscriber emails, phone numbers, or SMS opt ins.
STEP 2: THE RELATIONSHIP (Nurture). Turn warm supporters into loyal donors using channels you actually own (Email journeys, direct calls, SMS).
Play the middle game: Move your ad spend out of top-of-funnel fluff and direct ask desperation. Focus heavily on mid-funnel lead generation where real trust is built.
Make the rules work for you: Take full advantage of UK email soft opt-ins to build hyper-engaged subscriber lists that actually want to hear from you.
Treat donors like partners, Not ATMs: Keep supporters hooked by inviting them to sign petitions, share campaigns, and take meaningful actions before throwing a pitch.
